What is the kapde ke badle bartan exchange?
Anyone who grew up in India knows the sound of it — the bartanwali calling from the gali, a cart or a bundle of steel vessels, and a negotiation at the door over how many old sarees a set of tumblers is worth. It has run continuously for generations, long before anyone used the word “recommerce”, and it works because both sides genuinely want what the other has.
It is also one of the few functioning household barter economies anywhere in the world. Networks like Bombay Recycling Concern have sustained clothes-for-utensils trade across Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad for around six decades. The behaviour never went away. What it never had was a digital version worth using.
The environmental case has become hard to ignore in the meantime. India generates roughly 78 lakh tonnes of textile waste a year — about 8.5% of the global total — and only around 1% is recycled into new clothing. Passing a wearable garment to someone who will wear it is dramatically better than any disposal route.

The biggest change is the last row of the “what you can get” column. Points are universal on the platform, so the person taking your clothes does not need to own utensils. You earn points from them and spend those points with somebody else entirely — which is exactly the constraint that has always limited doorstep barter.

What condition should the clothes be in?
Wearable and clean. Small flaws are fine if you photograph and describe them honestly. Badly torn or stained clothing is better sent for recycling than listed — misrepresenting condition just wastes a trip for both people.

If clothing is too worn to exchange, send it for textile recycling rather than to landfill. Only about 1% of India's textile waste currently becomes new clothing, so anything still wearable is far more useful passed on to someone than thrown away.
